A “Brady Bunch” Kitchen Goes Craftsman

  COTY winners - COTY Award

Remember the Brady Bunch kitchen – wrap-around brick with a wall oven where Alice faithfully produced dinner night after night? Our clients’ kitchen shared this feature. Their remodel goals included opening up the kitchen, creating more seating for their two children, and introducing Arts-n-Crafts aesthetics to the otherwise 1960’s home. Adjoining rooms and budget precluded expanding the footprint of this north-facing room and simply remodeling in the Craftsman style would make the kitchen feel like an isolated update. Therefore, we created a design that included:

  • Removing the original bank of floating upper cabinets (over the peninsula) and the original soffits – this did much to open up the kitchen
  • Adding counter height seating
  • Using a clean-lined sticking pattern for the cabinet doors that is traditional Craftsman but not out of place in a 1960s home when enameled cream and fitted with chrome hardware
  • Introducing a touch of traditional Douglas Fir through trim panels and accent trim
  • Incorporating decorative details from our clients’ Stickley furniture into the dining room hutch where more formality is welcomed
  • Selecting oil-rubbed bronze hardware

Cream enamel was carried into the dining room space through the upper cabinets, as were the kitchen tile, wall colors and flooring to visually tie the kitchen to the remainder of the main floor living space.
