High Function Craftsman Kitchen: Winner of 2011 COTY Award for Best Historic Remodel
This 126 sq. ft. kitchen/dining space was remodeled for a Bryn Mawr family in spring 2010 and shown on the Minneapolis-St. Paul Home Tour. Our client’s remodel goals were to “rescue” their classic 1929 Craftsman Bungalow home from a 1970s-era kitchen by restoring the home’s rightful aesthetics and, ultimately, its market value WITHOUT adding square footage. Kitchen design features include:
- A small serve-thru that doubles as a counter height table where the family’s two children can enjoy after-school snacks
- A ceiling height pantry with extension roll-out trays to maximize dry goods storage
- Pull-out drawers to disguise garbage and recycling bins (that once sat in the corner of the kitchen)
- A family “information center” to charge cell phones, ipods, and laptops
- A built-in chalk-board for phone messages
- A built-in cork board, coat, and shoe storage next to the “family (side) entry”
- A full-length, built-in bench in the dining room to accommodate an additional 6-8 dinner guests when entertaining
- Period finishes such as Carrera marble and custom oak cabinetry (stained to match original trim throughout the home)
Green materials, such as FSC certified wood, spray foam insulation, and Energy Star appliances, were used as is standard for all of our projects.
